Consumers expect the highest degree of unspoilt quality when buying organic products. However, many customers do also like to indulge in flavoured teas which we are happy to provide in addition to our comprehensive range of non-flavoured Herbaria teas.
Enough to spoil your appetite: the official German flavouring regulations
As a member of the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN) Herstellung und Handel e.V., we endeavour to adhere to extremely stringent principles for the flavouring of foodstuffs, principles which go far beyond the statutory requirements. For example, the current German flavouring regulations interpret the term “natural” so broadly that flavours derived from natural raw materials such as “tree bark” or “abattoir waste” can be declared “natural flavourings”. Not particularly appealing to enlightened consumers!

Strictest criteria for Herbaria products
As a basic principle, we flavour our teas with essential oils from controlled organic growers wherever possible. If flavouring with essential oils is not possible we use a very small proportion of so-called FTNF category natural flavourings. Thus, for example, 90 per cent of natural FTNF cinnamon flavour – from the named fruit – originates from the raw material after which it is named, namely cinnamon. The FTNF flavours used by Herbaria are tested using a long and stringent list of criteria. Thus, they have to meet the following standards during manufacture: no use of genetically modified raw materials, no use of animal raw materials, no dubious solvents, no questionable extraction methods, and much more besides. We reject nature-identical and artificial flavours, flavours which imitate raw materials or correct quality defects, preservatives, flavour enhancers and colourings as a matter of principle.
